Overview: Some things I read on 21.08.2025

From WAPO:

“The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future,” Trump’s post said.

Daily Kos:

NYT:

Russia Demands Role in Guaranteeing Ukraine’s Postwar Security

European and Ukrainian officials call the idea ludicrous, showing the large gaps in peace negotiations.

MSNBC:

Trump threatens Colorado with ‘harsh measures’ unless it frees a convicted felon
The president threatened to punish the state unless it agrees to free Tina Peters. Even by 2025 standards, this really isn't normal.
Aug. 21, 2025, 5:34 PM GMT+2

By Steve Benen

In early March, Donald Trump’s Justice Department raised eyebrows with an unexpected move: The DOJ’s civil division unexpectedly filed a brief in federal court, raising “concerns” about the criminal conviction of a former Colorado county clerk named Tina Peters.

The effort didn’t amount to much, but the president’s interest in the case didn’t fade. And in May, the Republican not only called for Peters’ release from prison, he also directed the Justice Department to take “all necessary action” to help secure her freedom. As part of the same online harangue, Trump, who lacks the authority to pardon those convicted of state crimes, went on to describe Peters as a “Political Prisoner” and a “hostage” whose trial deserved to be seen as “a Communist persecution.”

Title: Facism

Overview: Early Warnings of Fascism

Source: Lawrence Britt

Link: https://secularhumanism.org/2003/03/fascism-anyone/

Text:

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism. From the prominent displays of flags and bunting to the ubiquitous lapel pins, the fervor to show patriotic nationalism, both on the part of the regime itself and of citizens caught up in its frenzy, was always obvious. Catchy slogans, pride in the military, and demands for unity were common themes in expressing this nationalism. It was usually coupled with a suspicion of things foreign that often bordered on xenophobia.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights. The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

3. Identification of enemies/scape-goats as a unifying cause. The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions. The methods of choice—relentless propaganda and0 disinformation—were usually effective. Often the regimes would incite “spontaneous” acts against the target scapegoats, usually communists, socialists, liberals, Jews, ethnic and racial minorities, traditional national enemies, members of other religions, secularists, homosexuals, and “terrorists.” Active opponents of these regimes were inevitably labeled as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.4. The supremacy of the military/ avid militarism. Ruling elites always identified closely with the military and the industrial infrastructure that supported it. A disproportionate share of national resources was allocated to the military, even when domestic needs were acute. The military was seen as an expression of nationalism, and was used whenever possible to assert national goals, intimidate other nations, and increase the power and prestige of the ruling elite.

5. Rampant sexism. Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses.

6. A controlled mass media. Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.

7. Obsession with national security. Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting “national security,” and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous.

8. Religion and ruling elite tied together. Unlike communist regimes, the fascist and protofascist regimes were never proclaimed as godless by their opponents. In fact, most of the regimes attached themselves to the predominant religion of the country and chose to portray themselves as militant defenders of that religion. The fact that the ruling elite’s behavior was incompatible with the precepts of the religion was generally swept under the rug. Propaganda kept up the illusion that the ruling elites were defenders of the faith and opponents of the “godless.” A perception was manufactured that opposing the power elite was tantamount to an attack on religion.

9. Power of corporations protected. Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated. Since organized labor was seen as the one power center that could challenge the political hegemony of the ruling elite and its corporate allies, it was inevitably crushed or made powerless. The poor formed an underclass, viewed with suspicion or outright contempt. Under some regimes, being poor was considered akin to a vice.

11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts. Intellectuals and the inherent freedom of ideas and expression associated with them were anathema to these regimes. Intellectual and academic freedom were considered subversive to national security and the patriotic ideal. Universities were tightly controlled; politically unreliable faculty harassed or eliminated. Unorthodox ideas or expressions of dissent were strongly attacked, silenced, or crushed. To these regimes, art and literature should serve the national interest or they had no right to exist.

12. Obsession with crime and punishment. Most of these regimes maintained Draconian systems of criminal justice with huge prison populations. The police were often glorified and had almost unchecked power, leading to rampant abuse. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime. Fear, and hatred, of criminals or “traitors” was often promoted among the population as an excuse for more police power.

13. Rampant cronyism and corruption. Those in business circles and close to the power elite often used their position to enrich themselves. This corruption worked both ways; the power elite would receive financial gifts and property from the economic elite, who in turn would gain the benefit of government favoritism. Members of the power elite were in a position to obtain vast wealth from other sources as well: for example, by stealing national resources. With the national security apparatus under control and the media muzzled, this corruption was largely unconstrained and not well understood by the general population.

14. Fraudulent elections. Elections in the form of plebiscites or public opinion polls were usually bogus. When actual elections with candidates were held, they would usually be perverted by the power elite to get the desired result. Common methods included maintaining control of the election machinery, intimidating and disenfranchising opposition voters, destroying or disallowing legal votes, and, as a last resort, turning to a judiciary beholden to the power elite.

Does any of this ring alarm bells? Of course not. After all, this is America, officially a democracy with the rule of law, a constitution, a free press, honest elections, and a well-informed public constantly being put on guard against evils. Historical comparisons like these are just exercises in verbal gymnastics. Maybe, maybe not.

Details on the effort were confirmed in a recent letter to Congress by acting Social Security Administrator Lee Dudek and by several sources familiar with the project.

Overview: A friend told me that I really needed to look at the "Big Picture"

Several days ago I posted to FB a quick comment that the current scandals was like Watergate but with Morons.

I was open a debate but one of my personal friends posted something like the other side, meaning the Dems, were just as bad. Here is the quote: "I don't think it's limited to just one side of the isle back there in Leakington DC."

Starting a discussion with an equivalency, a bad one at that, does not start a good debate. He also mentioned that he was an Independent but it is obvious he is not. Of course that does not really matter but not having the backbone to say "Yes, I am a Republican" does not add to that debate either.

The discussion strayed into other water such as NATO and all the back think President Biden as done but then he wrote that to really understand the problem (meaning what a shit Pres. Biden is)I would have to see the "big Picture" and, he would obviously provide that for me. Only with his help and guidance could I see the "Big Picture."

Title: Marijuana in California

Overview: Taxes in the Marihuana World

I just read the following: "Tax cuts and other reforms are coming to the California cannabis industry as authorities seek to revamp a system that businesses, growers, and others say has been stymied by over-regulation."

If it isn't gangsters or the police the revenuers come calling. LIke with cigarettes, alcohol and stuff in the beauty industry, California thought they could hugely profit by taxing the folks in the marijuana business. I guess it doesn't really matter if they, the state, drive the businesses out of business thereby not getting any taxes so reducing the taxes on the owners is a smart move in my opinion.

At some point during the 60's Northern California became well known for having some of the best marijuana in the business. The area known as the Trinity Alps located near Weaverville, California apparently was heaven for hippies who grew their own weed and sold some here and there for survival. Seemed pretty.

During the late 60's however, marijuana joined "big business" in California and many other states and were competing against Mexican growers in a very lucrative market. It has always seemed very stupid to me that there were not more aggressive attempts to legalize a wonderful plant then tax it fairly.

California apparently got the message that over-taxation is not the way so they are going to change the tax rate. Let's see how well that works.

Also from the LA Times, 07.07.2022: A bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom cuts a cultivation tax placed on cannabis growers and shifts excise tax collection from distributors to retail businesses, according to the California Cannabis Industry Assn.

The new law, AB 195, is being touted as a step in the right direction.

One might question why I added my thoughts on the Roe v Wade decision in a political blog rather than somewhere having to do with religion. Because the decision has just about nothing to do with religion and everything to do with politics.

Title: Roe v. Wade Decision

Overview: My thoughts on the Roe V. Wade decision

When I read the original news that Roe v Wade had been overturned I was neither surprised nor shocked. In the aftermath of that new and many news cycles, however, I picked up on a couple of things I had not previously noticed.

The first thing I noticed was that many of my so-called "conservatives" who had never mentioned a word about abortion were now openly proud that the Court had finally after decades done the right thing by overturning that horrible decision. I think their silence before the decision was not just sitting on the fence but rather a type of cowardice.

The second thing has more to do with phrasing. The right likes to use the term "anti-abortion" much more than "pro-life." The unspoken part, however, is that persons who are not anti-abortion must be pro-abortion rather than pro-choice. Those who are pro-abortion must be sinister, really bad people.

Everything about the right has to do with an "either-or" situation with no area in between or room for discussion. Another thing in the same vein is to add something to the story that might or might not have anything to do with the topic. Actually, there is almost always no connection to the abortion topic and often even less than a strawman argument because the author just wants to inform the reader of other very important things. Take the following as a good example.

I recently made a short post on Facebook about how the court's decision made me sad and certainly did not paint the US as a pillar of equality and freedom. A person I have known and respected since 1978 commented that he was not for abortion but sort of said a woman's choice should be considered. He went on a long story about how Planned Parenthood started was formed to reduce the number of black women having children which, in my eyes, indicated Planned Parenthood is not a reputable organization. Bringing Planned Parenthood into the discussion missed my point entirely.
